What is samadhi?
“There are several kinds. One type of samadhi is when you are meditating. A current passes through the body, you go into samadhi, and you forget about your body. There is another type of samadhi that is deeper than the first. The current passes from the backside of your spine and you go into samadhi. That becomes a sort of standard samadhi. Then there is yet another deeper samadhi where the soul comes out of your body and stabilizes about six inches over the head. Then you can get God realization [sakshatkara]. After some time the soul re-enters the body. There is also a kind of samadhi in meditation in which one gets experiences. One gets a lot of happiness and forgets about one’s body. That is another kind of samadhi that results from the experiences.”
Could Swamiji describe a little what samadhi is like?
“Read the history of Swami and you will come to know. If you reach that stage, then talking about it would be good to pull you up. What is the use of telling you about it now? If Swami tells you about samadhi now you will think of that in your meditation instead of doing your meditation. If you really reach the state of samadhi then it will be up to Swami to guide and tell you how to go forward from there.”
Can one reach samadhi just by meditating an hour each day?
“If you meditate for an hour daily then your mind will come under control. One day you will get samadhi and then you will not be aware of how long you have been sitting in meditation.”
If we meditate faithfully every day, is there any guarantee that we will reach samadhi in this lifetime?
“Yes. Swamiji gives you a guarantee. If you learn, he will teach you samadhi. If you practice daily then you can reach samadhi in this lifetime.”
“If you practice meditation you will automatically get samadhi. As you keep practicing meditation you will get a lot of happiness and bliss. The kind of happiness you get in meditation does not exist on this earth anywhere else. All the kinds of happiness that you experience outside is nothing compared to the happiness you get when you meditate.”
“In this blissful happiness, there is a current passing through your body. When the current passes through your body and into your head you get to this state of samadhi and slowly you will start going out of your body. The soul will go out of your body and stay six inches above your head. You will remain in samadhi until your soul returns into your body. It could be a period of a few hours or thousands of years.”
“The body will take care of itself and feed itself as long as the person remains in samadhi. The body will not spoil. Only if the soul leaves you totally will the body start disintegrating. As long as you remain in samadhi, your body will remain intact until the soul comes back into your body. You do not have to worry about it.”
“However, the soul does not have any interest to come back into the body. It wants to leave the body. It wants to go back to the planet from where it had come.”
Does Self realization come all at once, or is it gradual?
“Enlightenment happens in a moment and it happens only once. Tapas is performed gradually.”
When will I get enlightenment?
“When you get the blessings of your guru.”
